Unique Plant Adaptions Plants in the savanna are made to adapt through long periods of drought. The plants in savanna have many types of adaptations to survive through the the biome. For example, the plants have adapted in the Savanna by the plants having long tap roots that reach down the soil for deep water banks. Many of the trees having thick fire resistant bark and having large trunks for storing water.
Jarrah Tree
The adaptation of the Jarrah Tree is called lignotuber, it's a large swelling in underground, that collects carbohydrates, it could make a young Jarrah plant grow after a fire.
Umbrella Thorn Acacia
The adaptions of the Umbrella Thorn Acacia is that it can endure hot and dry conditions. The Umbrella Thorn Acacia's tap roots can reach 35 meters deep to reach underwater banks.
Elephant Grass
The elephant adaption that the shallow roots allow the elephant grass to absorb water really quickly. The elephant grass has hairy, course blades and sharp edges that keep predators from eating the plant. The sharp edges help protect the birds nesting inside the grass from predators.
Kangaroo Paw
The adaption of the Kangaroo paw is that the flowers have tiny woolly hairs that have water droplets, that make the flowers taste unpleasant to animals that consume it. The Kangaroo paw has adapted to the dry conditions, requiring less water then other plants and can tolerate a high temperature. The Kangaroo paw has a strong perch that pollinators e.g wattle birds and honey eaters that pollinate other plants.
Eucalyptus Tree
Many types of eucalyptus tree are drought tolerant. The Eucalyptus trees have a sticky like gum sap in their trunks. The sap is a tissue that transports substances such as water, sugars, hormones and minerals through the plant. The Eucalyptus tree is strange in a way because normally plants have their stomata and chloroplasts on one side of the leaves but the Eucalyptus trees have it on both sides. The Eucalyptus tree has oil that is a powerful toxic disinfectant; when the oil is exposed, is when it is evaporated. There are cons for the oil, marsupials like the koala and possums can tolerate the oil and insect pests that use the eucalyptus as a food source.
Baobab Tree
The Baobab tree has a unique adaption is that it has a shiny and slick outer bark that can reflect the light and heat, in order for it to cool down. The other use of the slippery bark is that it stops monkeys, elephants and other herbivores from eating its leaves and flowers. IT is known that with its reflective bark it protects the tree from fires.
The flowers of the Baobab tree may look pretty but looks can be decisive, the flowers have a stinky smell. This adaption helps the tree to reproduce by attracting its main pollinator the fruit bat, the smell attracts other critters such as flies, moths and ants help the spread the pollen from tree to tee, allowing the pollen to spread really quickly through the African Savanna.
The Baobab has deep tap roots that can suck water from underground and having a thick bark to preserve for the dry season. The Baobab tree can store up to 120000 liters of water to help it to survive.
